Green Mutual Funds
“Green Mutual Funds” are funds that invest in companies that are good for the environment. Typically these companies either
1. Are engaged directly in helping the environment–like innovative recycling, waste management, or asbestos removal companies, or
2. Have clean, sustainable, “Green” business models–meaning that their processes are not environmentally harmful
These “Green mutual funds have been gaining popularity recently as more and more investors are starting to think about the environment. Scares of global warming and increasing rates of natural disasters are pretty spooky, and many believe that if we don’t start taking care of the environment, this Earth may not be a very nice place in the near future.
Why not make money and help the environment at the same time?
So where can you find “Green Mutual Funds?”
A leader in the market is a company called Green Century Funds. Since 1991–which is before the trend really started getting big–Green Century has been providing investors a way to do just that–make money and help the environment.
They have two funds to choose from…
1. The Green Century Balanced Fund–which consists of both stocks and bonds
2. The Green Century Equity Index Fund–which is comprised primarily of stocks
The Equity Index Fund tracks the Domini 400 Social Index, which consists of 400 environmentally (and socially) friendly public companies.

Another interesting, environmentally-friendly mutual fund is the New Alternatives Fund. This fund invests in companies that operate in the dynamic alternative energy industries. Things like wind power, fuel cells, solar energy, and energy conservation are on their list of priorities.
The New Alternatives Fund, which you can find more information on from Yahoo! Finance, hasn’t performed that well so far in 2008, but then again, what investment really has?
